Summary

Josie Iselin, the author of Abrams’ popular Heart Stones, turns to sea glass hearts for a companion volume that promises to be just as appealing. Beachcombers the world over treasure sea glass—the shards of broken glass that are tumbled by the waves into smooth, pebblelike forms. They know which colors are common (green and brown) and which are unusual (black, yellow, red, and, especially, orange) and they can often identify the age and origin of a specimen. On rare occasions, sea glass takes the shape of a heart, the universal symbol of love. In Sea Glass Hearts, Iselin assembles an inspiring collection of these precious objects that are free for the taking—if you are lucky enough to find them!

Summary

Melissa Bashardoust’s acclaimed debut novel Girls Made of Snow and Glass is “Snow White as it’s never been told before...a feminist fantasy fairy tale not to be missed” (BookPage)! “Utterly superb.” —ALA Booklist, starred review “Dark, fantastical, hauntingly evocative.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “An empowering and progressive original retelling.” —SLJ, starred review Sixteen-year-old Mina is motherless, her magician father is vicious, and her silent heart has never beat with love for anyone—has never beat at all, in fact, but she’d always thought that fact normal. She never guessed that her father cut out her heart and replaced it with one of glass. When she moves to Whitespring Castle and sees its king for the first time, Mina forms a plan: win the king’s heart with her beauty, become queen, and finally know love. The only catch is that she’ll have to become a stepmother. Fifteen-year-old Lynet looks just like her late mother, and one day she discovers why: a magician created her out of snow in the dead queen’s image, at her father’s order. But despite being the dead queen made flesh, Lynet would rather be like her fierce and regal stepmother, Mina. She gets her wish when her father makes Lynet queen of the southern territories, displacing Mina. Now Mina is starting to look at Lynet with something like hatred, and Lynet must decide what to do—and who to be—to win back the only mother she’s ever known...or else defeat her once and for all. Entwining the stories of both Lynet and Mina in the past and present, Girls Made of Snow and Glass traces the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start. Only one can win all, while the other must lose everything—unless both can find a way to reshape themselves and their story.

Summary

In "Lake of Fire" our main character travels through the world, escaping mental institutions and jobs to keep one step ahead of his father (whose name is Dr. Crabb) who is pursuing him to take over the family business. What is the family business? Nothing short of (eventual) world domination. Our main character finds that the farther he runs from his father, the more he becomes him, discovering that he has been inside of him all along. In a final climactic scene, father and son, reunited descend into the firey depths of the Lake of Fire. In the second part of our book, "A Fire in the Heart" we experience episodes of miracle and of nightmare as the world is examined on an autopsy table of the author's dreams and fears. In the third book, "Jupiter's Hills" I weep for the beauty of the world. Ostensibly a story about Jupiter's Hills, history is examined. The hills are from Jupiter, belong to the God Jupiter or are just red hills here on Earth that suggest a strata of reality and detail that is other-worldly.

Summary

The Heart in the Glass Jar begins with one man's literal heart (that of a prominent statesman in mid-nineteenth-century Mexico) but is truly about the hearts, bodies, legal entanglements, and letters--as both symbols and material objects--of northern Mexicans from the 1860s through the 1930s. William E. French's innovative study of courtship practice and family formation examines love letters of everyday folk within the framework of literacy studies and explores how love letters functioned culturally and legally. French begins by situating love letters in the context of the legal system, which protected the moral order of families and communities and also perpetuated the gender order--the foundation of power structures in Mexican society. He then examines reading and writing practices in the communities that the letters came from: mining camps, villages, small towns, and the "passionate public sphere" that served as the wider social context for the love letters and crimes of passion. Finally, French considers "sentimental anatomy," the eyes, hearts, souls, and wills of novios (men and women in courting relationships), that the letters gave voice to and helped bring into being. In the tradition of Carlo Ginzburg's The Cheese and the Worms and Natalie Zemon Davis's The Return of Martin Guerre, French connects intimate lives to the broader cultural moment, providing a rich and complex cultural history from the intersection of love and law.

Summary

Jeanie Deans, a dairymaid, decides she must walk to London to gain an audience with the Queen. Her sister is to be executed for infanticide and, while refusing to lie to help her case, Jeanie is desperate for a reprieve. Set in the 1730s in a Scotland uneasily united with England, The Heart of Mid-Lothian dramatizes different kinds of justice - that meted out by the Edinburgh mob in the lynching of Captain Porteous, and that encountered by a terrified young girl suspected of killing her baby. Based on an anonymous letter Scot received in 1817, this is the seventh and finest of Scott's 'Waverley' novels. It was an international bestseller and inspired succeeding novelists from Balzac to George Eliot.

Summary

'A work of glorious intelligence and literary devices . . . Nonsense becomes a form of higher sense' Malcolm Bradbury 'I had sent my heroine straight down a rabbit-hole . . . without the least idea what was to happen afterwards,' wrote Lewis Carroll, describing how Alice was conjured up one 'golden afternoon' to entertain a young girl. His dream worlds of nonsensical Wonderland and the back-to-front Looking-Glass kingdom depict order turned upside-down: a baby turns into a pig, time is abandoned at a disordered tea-party and a seven-year-old girl is made Queen. But amongst the anarchic humour and sparkling word play, puzzles and riddles, are poignant moments of nostalgia for lost childhood. Edited with an Introduction and notes by Hugh Haughton

Summary

"Hearts of Glass will break your heart and put it back together again. A nail-biting love story with twists and turns you won't see coming. I loved every beautifully written word." Hot Heroes Books While Daniel lies in a coma in the hospital in Las Vegas, Janie is told that the love of her life is married to his late wife's sister, Kristin Jurgen, the respected neurosurgeon who is treating him. Panicked and devastated, Janie doesn't know who, or what to believe. Too skeptical to go to the police, because of Kristen's stainless reputation as an award-winning doctor, Janie decides to take matters into her own hands . . . Janie. My mind was spinning. I could hardly breathe. Standing inside Daniel’s hotel, where I’d been living so happily for the last few days, I tried to evaluate what was happening. My mouth was a gaping hole as I painfully swallowed the concierge’s words: “Her first name is Kristin. I believe her name, before she married, was Jürgen.” “Daniel’s wife?” I asked again, as I leaned against Ethan’s front desk to support my Jell-O legs. His eyes softened. “Look, I’m sorry. But . . . I’ll bet you’re not the first.” Daniel: The horror of what is happening to me is beneath my fingertips, but I cannot move them. It is on my breath but I cannot speak. It is before my eyes yet I cannot even blink. Iam immobile. But my brain is alive. Very much alive. I want to jump up and grab them by the throats—these gatekeepers who are forcing me to be imprisoned in my own body. I was awake. I was well. Janie was with me and it was a matter of hours—yes, hours—before I knew I’d be up and running again. I could taste recovery. But then they medicated me. Medicated me back to oblivion. Summary

HIGH MILEAGE HEARTS takes us back into the 20th century to days when if your dog lost the use of his hindquarters, he wasn't euthanized. Instead, he maneuvered about on a wheeled, home-built cart with a high-flying flag to pinpoint his location. The nine authors explore small town and rural living in a quieter, safer, more serene time, when fear meant the possibility of a snake dropping from the rafters rather than an act of terrorism, when a pharmacy security system was an oversized, rambunctious dog, not electronic surveillance. The authors share their quest for adventure, their quiet times, the fun and folly of their lives. The poetry addresses everything from humor to spirituality. Fiction is drawn from the imaginations and life experiences of the authors. We can't, nor perhaps would we want to, go back but we can cherish the way it used to be.
