Summary

Kurt F. Jensen argues that Canada was a more active intelligence partner in the Second World War alliance than has previously been suggested. He describes Canada's contributions to Allied intelligence before the war began, as well as the distinctly Canadian activities that started from that point. He reveals how the government created an intelligence organization during the war to aid Allied resources. This is a convincing portrait of a nation with an active role in Second World War intelligence gathering, one that continues to influence the architecture of its current capabilities.

Summary

America's struggle against Nazism is one of the few aspects of World War II that has escaped controversy. Historians agree that it was a widely popular war, different from the subsequent conflicts in Korea and Vietnam because of the absence of partisan sniping, ebbing morale, or calls for a negotiated peace. In this provocative book, Steven Casey challenges conventional wisdom about America's participation in World War II. Drawing on the numerous opinion polls and surveys conducted by the U.S. government, he traces the development of elite and mass attitudes toward Germany, from the early days of the war up to its conclusion. Casey persuasively argues that the president and the public rarely saw eye to eye on the nature of the enemy, the threat it posed, or the best methods for countering it. He describes the extensive propaganda campaign that Roosevelt designed to build support for the war effort, and shows that Roosevelt had to take public opinion into account when formulating a host of policies, from the Allied bombing campaign to the Morgenthau plan to pastoralize the Third Reich. By examining the previously unrecognized relationship between public opinion and policy making during World War II, Casey's groundbreaking book sheds new light on a crucial era in American history.

Summary

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, grade: HD, The Australian National University (Fenner School of Environment and Society), course: Forest Policy, language: English, abstract: As one amongst few countries with largest forest coverage, Indonesia puts a lot of hopes of benefitting from Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradatoin (REDD) Implementation, a program strongly believed as incentive for forest protection in developing countries. Yet, like many programs in the past, some doubt that REDD will be smoothly implemented. This paper tries to revisit some of the major obstacles put forward by scholars and practitioners. These include the issue of leakage and land tenure insecurity, as well as the issue of carbon pricing which are crucial in determining whether or not incentive offered by REDD is more attractive than incentives to deforest. A discussion about factors that contribute to leakage and land tenure insecurity is then followed by a simple calculation to predict whether price of carbon credit per hectare offered at REDD Project in Ulumasen Forest is much more interesting than revenue obtained from logging that one hectare. This calculation indicated that the incentive to forest logging surpassed the incentive to conserve as a result of carbon credit. It is recommended that careful and transparent feasibility study prior to REDD implementation to avoid its inevitable marginalizing impacts particularly for forest-dependent people.

Summary

Shortly before his death last year, Stanley Middleton completed this, his last novel, which concludes a unique depiction of middle-class life in 'Middle England', quietly and cumulatively over many volumes and decades. Once again we are in Beechnall, the constant setting of Stanley Middleton's novels, and his sense of place and his feeling for his characters remains as strong as ever. At the heart of A Cautious Approach is a tentative love story, which begins when two lonely men meet, out walking on Christmas Day: Andy invites George home, and there he meets the captivating Mirabel, Andy's former fiancée. George has been a teacher, but ill health has deprived him of his career and confidence, and he has retrained as a postman. This chance encounter, and others that follow, have the potential to shift George's life, and soon he is drawn into a set of uncertain relationships in which past experience, present stoicism and future expectation all play a part. As ever, but here for the last time, Stanley Middleton's bold experimentation with flashbacks, and the embedding of one scene or dialogue within another, gives added density to his depiction of ordinary, defiantly unfashionable human lives.

Summary

This volume anticipates the deradicalization of the Nation of Islam’s erstwhile extremist discourse, depicting the return of a sort of ‘prodigal son’ to the common American national identity, after over three generations spent in denial of the mother country. In addition to investigating this shift in identification observed among the disciples of the sect during the past decade, the volume offers a reflection on how ethnicity is much more resilient than ethnic identity itself. From a social psychological perspective, it speculates that, unlike ethnic identity, ethnicity allows people to change identity at will in order to circumvent the identities imposed on them or assigned to them by birth. It also illustratively demonstrates the feasibility of thorough academic research in cultural studies.

Summary

Despite many years of development, risk management remains problematic for the majority of organizations. One common challenge is the human dimension, in other words, the way people perceive risk and risk management. Risk management processes and techniques are operated by people, each of whom is a complex individual, influenced by many different factors. And the problem is compounded by the fact that most risk management involves people working in groups. This introduces further layers of complexity through relationships and group dynamics. David Hillson's and Ruth Murray-Webster's Understanding and Managing Risk Attitude will help you understand the human aspects of risk management and to manage proactively the influence of human behaviour on the risk process. The authors introduce a range of models, perspectives and examples to define and detail the range of possible risk attitudes; looking both at individuals and groups. Using leading-edge thinking on self-awareness and emotional literacy, they develop a powerful approach to address the most common shortfall in current risk management: the failure to manage the human aspects of the process. All this is presented in a practical and applied framework, rather than as a theoretical or academic treatise, based on the authors' shared experiences and expertise, rather than empirical research. Anyone involved in implementing risk management will benefit from this book, including risk practitioners, senior managers and directors responsible for corporate governance, project managers and their teams. It is also essential reading for HR professionals and others interested in organizational or behavioural psychology. This second edition is updated to strengthen the understanding of individual risk attitudes and reinforce what individuals can do to manage those risk attitudes that are leading them away from their objectives. For people who want to embrace this subject, the book highlights ways forward that are proven and practical.

Summary

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Literature - Africa, grade: Undergraduate, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: The essay looks at the role of the trickster in oral literature and argues that the trickster is neither male nor female. The essay argues that the trickster is androgynous and it is this concept that makes the trickster able to outwit the larger and more powerful creatures in the tales. As such, the essay makes a point that the trickster's success at outwitting animals in folklore has nothing to do with it being male!
